NWLC Reports on Women in Construction - Leaves Out Women Business Owners

On June 11, 2014, the National Women’s Law Center released a new report: Women in Construction: Still Breaking Ground. While there are some interesting statistics highlighted below, they have left out entirely the industry challenges and discrimination faced by women-own construction firms. In reaching out to NWLC, they are interested in hearing from us.
Please help us to educate them - review the report (www.nwlc.org/construction); then send an email to lee@uswcc.org with your list of challenges that you would like added to the report. Thank you.
- Only 2.6 percent of construction workers are women. That number is the same as it was in 1983.
o The number of women of color working in construction is even worse.
- Several barriers are keeping women from entering and remaining in nontraditional jobs:
o Sexual harassment
o Lack of women mentors
o Stereotyped assumptions about women’s ability to do the job
- Traditionally male fields pay more. If women are in those jobs, the wage gap shrinks.
Women deserve an equal shot at higher paying, nontraditional jobs. So take a break, read our report, and then help us spread the word by sharing it with a friend or loved one!
